History

From ancient Germanic tribes to the world's fourth-largest economy — a journey of wars, unifications, and reinvention.

9 AD
Battle of Teutoburg Forest
Germanic tribes led by Arminius defeated three Roman legions — stopping Roman expansion into Germanic lands forever. This is why Germany is not a Latin-speaking country today.
800 AD
Charlemagne — Holy Roman Emperor
Charlemagne (Karl der Große) unified much of Western Europe under Frankish rule. Often called the "Father of Europe." The Holy Roman Empire lasted until 1806.
1517
Protestant Reformation
Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg. This changed Christianity forever and split Europe into Catholic and Protestant regions — reshaping politics, wars, and culture.
1618–1648
Thirty Years' War
One of history's deadliest conflicts. Fought across Central Europe, it killed 30% of Germany's population. Ended with the Peace of Westphalia — the foundation of modern international law.
1871
German Unification
Otto von Bismarck united 39 German states into the German Empire. Kaiser Wilhelm I was proclaimed emperor at Versailles. Germany became an industrial and military powerhouse overnight.
1914 – 1918
World War I
Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire fought Britain, France and Russia. Germany was defeated. The humiliating Treaty of Versailles crushed the economy — leading to hyperinflation where bread cost billions of marks.
1933 – 1945
Nazi Era & World War II
Adolf Hitler's Nazi party rose to power using economic desperation. The Holocaust killed 6 million Jews and millions of others. Germany was completely defeated in 1945, its cities in ruins, and divided by the Allied powers.
1949
Two Germanys
West Germany (Federal Republic — democracy, capitalism) and East Germany (GDR — communist, Soviet-controlled) were formed. Two completely different countries, cultures, and economies developed for 40 years.
1961
Berlin Wall Built
East Germany built a wall overnight dividing Berlin. Families were separated. Anyone trying to cross was shot. The Wall became the most powerful symbol of the Cold War's Iron Curtain.
9 Nov 1989
Berlin Wall Falls 🎉
After massive protests, East Germany opened its borders. Crowds flooded the checkpoints and tore down the Berlin Wall with hammers. One of the most emotional moments in modern history. Watched live by the whole world.
3 Oct 1990
Reunification — Germany is One Again
Germany officially reunited after 45 years of division. October 3rd is now German Unity Day — a national holiday. Chancellor Helmut Kohl oversaw one of the most complex political mergers in history.
1993 – Present
European Union & Modern Germany
Germany is a founding pillar of the EU. It adopted the Euro in 2002. Today it's the largest economy in Europe, 4th in the world — known for engineering, exports, and as a top global study destination.

Landscape

Germany has incredibly diverse geography — from sea to Alps in just 900 km.

🌊

Northern Lowlands

Flat plains stretching from the Dutch border to Poland. The North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts have major ports. Hamburg and Bremen are here — Germany's trade gateways to the world.

🌲

Central Uplands

Hilly, forested landscape. Includes the famous Black Forest (Schwarzwald), Harz mountains, and Rhine Valley. This is classic German fairy-tale countryside with rivers, castles and vineyards.

🏔️

Bavarian Alps

Germany's most dramatic landscape. The Zugspitze (2,962m) is Germany's highest peak. Stunning lakes like Königssee. Neuschwanstein Castle — the inspiration for Disney's castle — is here.

🌊

Major Rivers

Rhine, Elbe, Danube, and Main rivers criss-cross Germany. They've been trade routes for millennia. The Rhine Valley in particular is famous for its medieval castles and UNESCO heritage.

You must show €11,208/year in a German blocked account to prove you can support yourself. Popular providers: Fintiba, Expatrio, Deutsche Bank.

03

Apply for Student Visa

Visit the German consulate/embassy in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad). Book appointment early — slots fill fast. Takes 6–12 weeks.

Mandatory in Germany. Get public health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) — TK, AOK, or Barmer. About €110–120/month for students.

Within 14 days of arriving, register your address at the Einwohnermeldeamt. This is LEGALLY REQUIRED and needed to open a bank account, get a SIM, everything.

Many Masters are in English, but German B1/B2 is needed for most Bachelor programs. Even basic German makes daily life SO much easier. German people appreciate the effort.

🏦

Open N26 or DKB Account

Open a free German bank account ASAP after arriving. N26 and DKB are easiest for students. You'll need it to receive your Sperrkonto money monthly.

The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) is Germany's biggest scholarship program. Apply early — it covers living costs, health insurance, and even travel allowance!

🤝

Indian Student Associations

Almost every German city has an Indian Student Association. They will help you find accommodation, explain processes, cook Indian food together, and celebrate festivals. Find them on Facebook!

🚲

Get a Bicycle

Germans cycle EVERYWHERE. Buy a second-hand cycle for €50–100. It's free, fast, and environmentally perfect. Most cities have excellent cycle paths. Your semester ticket covers public transport too.

🌡️

Prepare for the Cold

German winters are BRUTAL for Indians (−10°C to −15°C). Buy good thermals, a quality jacket, and waterproof boots before winter hits. This is not Chennai or Mumbai ki thandi!
